Dear Iris, There is no definite answer to your query. The reason for this is that in Cambridge Upper Main Suite Exams you are not simply tested a specific number of words acquired, but rather in the four main skills plus vocabulary and grammar. I suggest you find an FCE Handbook and do a sample test, self-grade it using the Answer Key and see how well you do. If you do well above 60% of the maximum, try a CAE test and so on. Anyway, word stock approaching the upper figure within a 3,000-6,000-word range (if I can set up such a range, out of experience) would make you more confident in dealing with FCE, as a start. But it is very conditional, you know, how many of them are active vocabulary, how naturally you can use the words and so on. Active study of around 600-700 hours may also be a guideline for an FCE should-pass. Yours, Emil Panayotov Bulgaria
