"A grammar question"
Hello everybody,

I need your help!

I am teaching inversions after negative or restrictive adverbs, for example "not only... but also", "No sooner...than", etc.

I know we need to invert the order of the subject and the auxiliary, that is, firstly we write the auxiliary and secondly the subject of the sentence. I don't know in which sentence (in the main or subordinate sentence) i need to use the inversion:

E.g. It was only when the intruders had forced their way into the house that they came across the huge Alsatian dog.

Which sentence is the right one? Why? I’d like to know the explanation
1. ONLY WHEN had the intruders forced their way into the house, they came across the huge Alsatian dog
2. ONLY WHEN the intruders had forced their way into the house, did they come across the huge Alsatian dog.

I will be very grateful if you answer my e-mail with a solution.

Mmm..
I can see that I have in front of me the same piece of paper that you have
NUmber 2 is correct. I don't know any "scientific" explanation, but the case is that after constructions:
Only after...
Only when...
Only later... - you use inversion in the second part of the sentence.
In my opinion.. it's a chronological and logical order...

Hi! The correct form is the second one:

2. ONLY WHEN the intruders had
forced their way into the
house, did they come across
the huge Alsatian dog.

Inversions in the second clause are used after certain words:
-Only then..
-Only after..
-Only when..
-Only if..
-Only by..
-Only later..
-Not only..

Inversion is a formal structure and it is used for emphasis or to link new information with previous info.

....wish me good luck! I will take the exam on December..
