"relative pronouns where/which"
My students often have problems with sentences such as teh following:

The docks, which used to be so busy, are now deserted and empty.

A typical exercise has the relative pronoun gapped and asks them to fill the gap with the correct relative pronoun.

Many students correctly surmise that 'the docks' refers to a place and put 'where'. I know this is wrong and that it doesn't fit the grammar that follows but I don't know why nor how to explain it to them.

Can anyone help?

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

Well, I'm no expert but from my grammar book (and it's a good idea to have one to refer to for yourself) "where" is a "relative adverb".

The only relative pronouns are who, which, that.

Hope this helps!

Cheers.

I think they have the influence of their own language.
