2. It has been brought to my attention that Sally is going to get married soon.

3. John was in no mood for going to the cinema yesterday evening.

4. There has been no surface water whatsoever in the desert for several decades.

5. We will soon be in deep water if they continue to keep us in the dark about their decisions.

6. Lisa is a bit slow on the uptake, but all the same, the most endearing student in her class.

7. The awful realities of war were eventually brought home to me by the documentary.

8. The rabbis understood the human propensity for the postponement of happiness to a future date.

These exercises are suitable for students preparing for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, but I'm sure they are useful to other students as well, such as those going to take CAE.

Well, I'm preparing for the CAE so these are yet difficult for me. Anyway, it's really useful as you've said. And btw, what's the word restriction in these exercise? I mean what's the allowed ammount of words?

You should use no more than eight words. You find the instructions below.

INSTRUCTIONS: For questions 1-8, complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence, using the word given. Do not change the word given. You must use between three and eight words, including the word given.

That's what I thought but sentence 3 has 9 words, that's why I wrote it in some mutilated way.

You are right. I should have given one word more, like this for example:

John ……………………………………………………………… cinema yesterday evening.

John WAS IN NO MOOD FOR GOING TO THE cinema yesterday evening.

But now I have edited the exercise should someone want to try to do it. Things happen...

Hello everybody, just a question if I can:

what about "procrastination" in sentence # 8 instead of postponement ?
Would it be suitable or too "pompous" ?

Thanks a lot. I am getting a huge amount of help from your exercises.

IMO not appropriate. Procrastination means the postponement of something that should be done.
